Karate originated as an
exceptionally effective art of self-defense and has since
evolved into a combative sport and a “Budo” - a way of self-improvement that utilizes the
training of a martial art as a pathway to self-mastery.
As an art of self-defense karate emphasizes the development of awareness, a confident projection of inner strength, and the physical attributes necessary to deal with a potential assailant. Students learn to
carry and project themselves in such a way as to avoid danger and not be chosen
as a target by a potential perpetrator. Should a physical encounter occur, karate
teaches students to neutralize an attack by utilizing distance control,
evasive movement, and blocking. And, if necessary, respond with powerful
strikes using the hands and feet as weapons targeting vital points within the human anatomy.
Karate as a combative sport emphasizes distance control,
evasive movement, and precision striking utilizing punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. In addition,
to enhance their striking ability athletes are trained to employ a variety of
foot sweep and throwing techniques. In order to allow for a safe practice of karate as a sport many of the techniques and targeting associated with self-defense are prohibited.
As a Budo karate is a highly
effective mind/body training discipline that uses the physical aspect of
training for self-defense as a tool to forge physical fitness, mental focus,
and an indomitable sense of spirit. As a result students find karate to be a unique and interesting way to get and stay in shape while gaining an enhanced
sense of personal strength and well being.
Shito-Ryu Karate The karate we teach
is predicated upon the precepts of Shito-Ryu Karate. Known for its
combination of evasive movement and power, Shito-Ryu is considered one of
the most versatile systems of Japanese karate. Because of its emphasis on
strategy and technique that can be employed by anyone regardless of size we
find it well suited to provide the technical foundation of our practice.
